Description

Crispy, golden puff pastry cheese straws flavored with paprika, Italian seasoning, and parmesan cheese, perfect for a savory snack or appetizer.

Ingredients

Scale

Puff Pastry

  • 1 sheet puff pastry, defrosted if frozen

Seasonings

  • 3/4 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Egg Wash

  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon water

Cheese

  • 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Heat the Oven: Set the oven rack to the middle position and preheat the oven to 375ºF (190ºC). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper and set aside.
  2. Defrost the Puff Pastry: If frozen, thaw the puff pastry overnight in the refrigerator or on the counter until cool but pliable, about 40 minutes.
  3. Make the Seasoning Mix: Combine paprika, dried Italian seasoning, kosher salt, and black pepper in a small bowl and set aside.
  4. Roll Out the Puff Pastry: Place the defrosted puff pastry on a lightly floured surface and roll it out to a 12 x 10-inch rectangle about 1/8-inch thick.
  5. Add Egg Wash: Whisk the egg and water together in a small bowl and brush the mixture evenly over the puff pastry surface.
  6. Add Seasoning and Cheese: Sprinkle the prepared seasoning mix and grated parmesan cheese evenly over the egg-washed pastry.
  7. Press in the Toppings: Gently press the cheese and seasoning into the dough with a rolling pin to help them adhere.
  8. Cut into Strips: Using a chef’s knife or pizza cutter, cut the puff pastry into 10-inch long strips approximately 3/4-inch wide, yielding about 12 strips.
  9. Twist the Strips: Twist each strip tightly and place them on the prepared baking sheets at least 1 inch apart, about six strips per sheet. Brush the tops again with egg wash.
  10. Bake: Bake the strips for 16 minutes or until they are golden brown, puffed, and crisp. Repeat with the second baking sheet. Serve warm or allow to cool completely on a wire rack.

Notes

  • Store finished cheese straws in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • To freeze, place the straws in a resealable bag or container for up to 1 month.
  • Reheat in a preheated oven at 350ºF (177ºC) on a baking sheet for 5 to 7 minutes until warm and crisp.
  • Lightly flour the surface when rolling out the pastry if it feels sticky to prevent tearing.
  • Ensure strips are twisted firmly to help them hold shape during baking.
