Description

This French Onion Dip recipe features deeply caramelized onions blended with creamy sour cream and mayonnaise, enhanced by garlic and Worcestershire sauce. Perfect as a flavorful appetizer or snack, it's ideal for serving with chips or fresh vegetables.

Ingredients

Scale

Caramelized Onions

  • 4 cups finely chopped yellow onions
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar
  • ¾ teaspoon kosher salt, divided
  • ¼ cup water
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic

Dip Base

  • 2 cups sour cream
  • ¼ cup mayonnaise
  • 1 ½ teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon chives

Instructions

  1. Melt the Butter – Set a large pot or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Melt the butter then add olive oil, brown sugar, ½ teaspoon salt, and black pepper. Stir to combine.
  2. Caramelize the Onions – Immediately add in the onions and stir to coat. Sauté while frequently stirring until they begin to soften and lightly brown, about 5 minutes. Reduce the heat to medium. Continue cooking while frequently stirring until evenly browned, about 10 minutes.
  3. Deglaze the Pan – Add 2 tablespoons of water, stir and scrape to deglaze the pan, and cook for 5 minutes. Add the remaining water and deglaze again. Cook until the mixture is brown and caramelized, about 5 minutes.
  4. Sauté the Garlic – Add the minced garlic and frequently stir until fragrant and the onions turn deep brown, about 4 to 5 minutes.
  5. Let it Cool – Transfer the caramelized onions to a medium bowl, then refrigerate until cool, about 10 minutes.
  6. Mix the Dip – To the cooled onions, add sour cream, mayonnaise, Worcestershire sauce, remaining ¼ teaspoon salt, onion powder, and black pepper. Stir together until smooth. Adjust seasoning with more salt and pepper to taste.
  7. Serve – Transfer the dip to a serving bowl. Garnish with chopped chives. Serve with chips or fresh vegetables.

Notes

  • Store the dip in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
  • For a Worcestershire sauce substitute, use 1 teaspoon soy sauce and ½ teaspoon apple cider vinegar or rice vinegar.
  • Use sweet onions if yellow onions are too sharp for a milder flavor.
  • Chilled dip develops deeper flavor; prepare a few hours ahead if possible.
  • Serve with pita chips, fresh vegetables, or crackers for variety.
